In an in-depth piece on Curry's signing with Under Armour at ESPN, the reigning MVP tells the story of Riley selecting the brand he would endorse. Curry showed her a Nike sneaker, an adidas sneaker, and an Under Armour sneaker.
"Threw it over her shoulder," Curry said of her reaction to the first shoe. "She picked up shoe two, threw it over her shoulder. She picked up the third shoe, walked over and handed it to me."
That third shoe was the Under Armour Anatomix Spawn.
"So I knew right then," Curry said.
The lengthy piece also discusses a botched pitch meeting in 2013 where Nike was trying to persuade Curry to renew his contract. Curry's father Dell said that a Nike official mispronounced Stephen as "Steph-on." What's more, a PowerPoint slide from the pitch mistakenly had Kevin Durant's name on it, indicating that the brand recycled its materials.
"I stopped paying attention after that," Dell said.
The piece ultimately gives much credit to Under Armour signee Kent Bazemore, Curry's old Warriors teammate who turned him on to the brand. Read more on how Steph Curry made the decision to leave Nike for Under Armour here.
