The collaboration between Nike Creative Director Mark Smith and famous hip hop artist Kanye West came into production in 2007 and first released as the Nike Air Yeezy in April 2009. After long speculation surrounding a new Kanye West show in 2012, the Air Yeezy 2 was released in May. The shoe was an instant hit and sold out almost immediately after releasing. The first shoe features a large “Y-print” and phosphorescent rubber outsole that gives it its unique look. The Air Yeezy was introduced in three colorways, “Zen Grey,” black and pink, commonly referred to the “Blinks,” and a “Net” design that resembles West’s style. The Air Yeezy 2 features a complete makeover than that of its precedent. A “snake skin” design surrounding the midsole, a ridged heel, Egyptian god Horus references on the tongue and insole, and the Egyptian hieroglyphics spelling of “YZY” all contribute to its unique appearance. It also borrowed the outer sole from the Nike Air Tech Challenge II. The second design has three colorway releases, “Solar Red,” “Pure Platinum,” and “Red Octobers.
