It will be a pivotal year for the Nike Cortez in 2022, when it celebrates its 50th Anniversary as a landmark model in the company’s vast portfolio. Designed and developed by Nike co-founders Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight, the Cortez was originally released as a track shoe to coincide with the 1972 Olympics. Since then, the model has evolved into a casual favorite, particularly being adopted as part of the “uniform” for Los Angeles street culture. Not only will Nike revisit some iconic Cortez colorways next year, but it’s also working with some noteworthy collaborators to stir up some buzz.
One of those collaborators will be Chitose Abe's Sacai, which has been responsible for some of Nike’s most coveted collaborations in recent years. Sources confirm with Sole Collector that Sacai x Nike Cortez collabs are on the way, though exact colorways and design cues have not yet been revealed. In this space, Sacai is known for its double tongue and exposed foam motif, which has appeared on shoes such as the LDWaffle, Blazer, and Vaporwaffle.
Additionally, Nike has Cortez projects with Los Angeles-based Union on the way. A release date for the Sacai x Cortez hasn’t been announced, but stick with us for that information, as well as a first look at the shoe(s) in the near future.
