Nike design legend Peter Moore originally wanted to call the Dunk the College Color High according to a new post from Nike that honors the model three decades after its debut.

The name came from the sneaker's spot in the College Colors program, which launched the Dunk alongside matching pieces of apparel and gear in instantly recognizable palettes tied to powerhouse programs. Nike urged "Be True To Your School," and allowed fans to do just that by picking up on the sneaker in combos made for the likes of UNLV, Kentucky, Georgetown, Syracuse, and other schools that were connected to Nike.

Nike's retrospective on the sneaker also mentions some of the design cues that informed the model. The sole is of course the same as that on its contemporaries the Air Jordan 1 and the Nike Terminator. The last was borrowed from the Nike Legend, a sneaker that Nike favored for its fit.

Gathered here are a bunch of original Nike Dunks from 1985, along with some of the catalogs and campaigns that introduced these ground-breaking sneakers to the world.
