Who knew that Marc Gasol would change the game of basketball forever when he tried to play defense with his Nike Hyperdunk sneakers?
Taking a cue from Gasol is Philippine Basketball Association player Rico Maierhofer of the Barako Bull Energy, who used his Nike KD 7 "Weatherman" sneaker in an attempt to block a shot during a recent game. Maierhofer didn't manage to get the ball, he swats the backboard instead in the clip of the incident above, but his move did force a pass and a turnover.
Unfortunately, this kind of wacky play isn't legal in the PBA. According to SPIN.ph, league operations director Rickie B. Santos said that the play could have resulted in a whistle for the use of a foreign object during the game.
