Earlier this week, Giannis Antetokounmpo was awarded 2019 NBA MVP honors following his most stellar season to date for the Milwaukee Bucks. In celebration of the accomplishment, Nike has finally provided the long-awaited reveal for the Greek Freak's first signature model, the Air Zoom Freak 1.
"I thought we were going to talk with five people about what I like in a shoe," he noted then. "It was much deeper than that. I was surprised by how many people are involved—the size of the team and the level of input they want from me on the product and what I want to represent," said Antetokounmpo in an official press release.
The Zoom Freak 1 is designed to cater perfectly to the 6'11" forward's unique game with components like a multidirectional traction pattern for quick cuts, rubber clip extending from the outsole through the midsole for lateral support, and double-stacked Zoom Air units in the heel for cushioning. The overall design takes cues from the 24-year old's favorite signature line, the Kobe series.
"Since I was little, I have been wearing Kobe shoes," he says. "The fit, feel and function has always been comfortable for me."
Various logos have also been created for Antetokounmpo's signature line that mesh his family's Greek and Nigerian heritage including a special font, and a "34" graphic inspired by the Greek flag that is featured on the heel of the shoe. Ancient Greek Fret patterns heavily influenced the design team for the primary logo featured on the Air Zoom Freak 1's tongue, an interlocking "G" and "A" that are meant to symbolize his journey, strength, and strong connection to his family.
This sentiment also comes through in special colorways, like the bright orange "All Bros" color scheme that represents his relationship with his brothers. Other options include a simplistic black and white pair with green accents to match his Bucks uniforms, as well as a clean white, gold, and red option. A signature line of apparel will accompany the sneakers as well that riffs off some of the same ideals.
"To be honest with you, I never dreamed of having a signature shoe. Growing up, the goal was making the NBA, playing hard, and helping your team win. This is a bonus," said Antetokounmpo.
