Jordan Brand has been known to pull inspiration from some rather interesting places in recent years. Last year, they released an Air Jordan 1 inspired by a shirt Michael Jordan wore during his Rookie of the Year acceptance speech. Another pair was a nod to an appearance that MJ made on Late Night With David Letterman back in the day. While this Air Jordan 1 does not take any direct inspiration from the man himself, it is certainly an interesting starting point for a colorway.
The "SP Gina" Air Jordan 1 is a tribute to a frequent customer at her local Shoe Palace location, known as SP Gina, who is always rocking the latest Air Jordan releases. Her Air Jordan 1 sports a shimmering black mesh upper, tonal leather Wings logo on the ankle collar, and subtle red hits on the "Nike Air" tongue tag and outsole. To make it official, an animated SP Gina has been stamped on each insole in white.
According to @zsneakerheadz, the "SP Gina" Air Jordan 1 is expected to hit select retailers in May 2019.
UPDATE (05/21): Shoe Palace has revealed that the Air Jordan 1 "SP Gina" will release on May 25 online at 1pm PST and at the BASCOM store at 8am on a first come, first served basis. A company wide release will then go down on June 1. Pairs will come in a special lunchbox-style box with an apple keychain and retro card.
In order to purchase the pair in-store, customers will need to pass a Scantron test questioning their sneaker knowledge. The caveat is inspired by Virginia Wright (aka SP Gina) working as an elementary school teacher in the Bay Area.
