With his first-ever Nike sneaker collaboration just weeks away, Fear of God founder Jerry Lorenzo was joined by John Mayer and Joe La Puma for Complex's newest cover story. Throughout the discussion, the trio touched on a wide variety of topics, with Lorenzo's Nike Air Fear of God 1 being a focal point.
Lorenzo says he insisted on having the freedom to develop his own sneaker rather than simply add a new color scheme to a pre-existing model. "I was willing to not have the opportunity if I couldn't honor it with my gifts and talents," Lorenzo said. "I went to Nike and said, 'My gift isn't in coloring up anything. My gift is in shape.'"
While it's not Fear of God's first sneaker collab—the brand previously worked with Vans on several sought-after styles—Lorenzo says his partnership with the Swoosh fell into place at the right time. "Everything is timing. Nike was in a place where they were open to new ideas and new perspectives," the designer said.
The Nike Air Fear of God 1 will release from NikeLab, SNKRS, fearofgod.com, and select retailers beginning on Saturday, Dec. 15. The Air Fear of God 1, which features a double-stacked Zoom Air unit in the heel and a Huarache Light-inspired TPU cage, will retail for $350. An off-court variation, the Air Fear of God SA (Shoot Around), is priced at $300.
