In addition to opening his own public school in Akron, Ohio and auctioning off 100 pairs of game-worn sneakers to benefit his foundation, LeBron James is making even more history this week.
LeBron James' mismatched "Equality" Nike LeBron 15 sneakers, worn against the Washington Wizards in D.C. on Dec. 17, 2017, were officially unveiled as the latest addition to the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in an event held on Tuesday. The announcement was made in front of 59 students from across the U.S., selected to travel for a two-day experience that included a tour of the nation's capital. Unfortunately, because of prior commitments to opening his school, James couldn't make the event, but took time ahead of the ribbon-cutting ceremony to film this video for the kids who attended the Smithsonian unveiling.
"On December 17, I chose to wear a pair of shoes, the LeBron 15 Equality, one black, one white," said James. "I use this shoe as inspiration. I want you guys to use this shoe as inspiration, as a voice."
At the request of James, the students were encouraged to take personal photos with the sneakers before they're moved to storage ahead of the fall exhibition.
In Feb., Nike launched a raffle for 400 pairs of "Equality" LeBron 15s, raising $457,780 for the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture.
