Originally introduced in 1965, the Stan Smith tennis shoe is Adidas' best selling sneaker of all-time. Because of that distinction, one couldn't blame the brand for playing it safe with the model and continuing to find success at the registers. After all, as the old saying goes, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." However, understanding the need to appeal to a new, younger audience, Adidas has taken many risks with the Stan Smith during its latest run, including variations made with Boost cushioning and Primeknit. Perhaps the most daring incarnation of the shoe to date comes from the fashion-forward Y-3 label, which has spawned the Stan Zip.
Back after its Summer '16 debut, the Stan Zip is now available in a "Triple Black" colorway. The rebuilt classic features a two-piece upper with a heat-pressed heel tab and removable zipper eyestay. At $320, this version of the Stan Smith won't be topping any best sellers list, but it continues to push the legacy forward in an organically creative way.
