The latest futuristic runner born of the NikeLab ACG imprint is the ACG.07.KMTR seen here, a shoe that eschews laces for a magnetic buckle and innovative fastening system. While the model may look cutting-edge, it was inspired by a pretty pedestrian item.
According to Nike, the starting point for this silhouette was designers putting a bag around a foot and forming it to the shape of a shoe. Their idea was to create a one-piece sneaker that offered a wide point of entry and a snug fit.
“We trialed a number of closure systems, and I began thinking about how a parachute unfurls and wondered how that might operate in reverse. Ultimately what worked best was pulling the cord through the shoe via a single hinge. This act molds the bag-like upper into form,” explains Nike designer Gerald Sullivan.
In true ACG fashion, the sneaker has a water-resistant shell on its upper. Other tech features include a Fidlock magnetic buckle and a pull-cord on the heel.
The NikeLab ACG.07.KMTR will release on May 18 alongside a new range of ACG apparel.
