Nike launched Air Max Day in 2014 as a celebration of the history of its landmark cushioning platform. The day not only honors the past but serves as an occasion to launch both new and retro product.
In its inaugural year, Nike gave us a new take on a classic as they placed the original red Air Max 1 atop a lime green sole. The next year, Nike unveiled the Air Max Zero—a Tinker Hatfield-designed prototype for what eventually became the Air Max 1. The 2016 celebration of Air Max Day was highlighted by the return of the collaborative Atmos x Nike Air Max 1 “Safari”, which was followed up in 2017 by a retro of Atmos' “Elephant Print” pair.
That wasn't the only surprise AM1 Nike had in store this year though. One of 2017’s special Air Max Day releases is a composite colorway officially called the "Master" Air Max 1. The new mashup takes details from some of the most iconic Air Max 1 colorways, including many collaborations, and molds them into an all-in-one new sneaker. Each different model is represented through various swatches on the mudguards of both shoes.
