After a 22-year-old man was shot dead in North Carolina, a single sneaker left at the scene of the crime may help police find the culprit. Thomas Randall McDonald was gunned down three weeks ago in Matthews, a suburb of Charlotte, Time Warner Cable News reports. Now, detective Matt Hefner is relying on the footwear clue to find the killer.

"Maybe a girlfriend saw her boyfriend without his normal shoes on and wondered where they were," said Hefner. “Someone saw a person missing their normal pair of expensive Nike Air Jordan shoes and I'd like to know who that person is."

For now, police believe that the killing was random, and possibly a robbery.

The sneaker left behind was the Air Jordan 9 "Anthracite," a September, 2015 release.
