The good news: the Nike Air Max 96 is coming back. The bad news: it's not really the Nike Air Max 96. Instead, the model has been tweaked, its traditional sole swapped out for one that looks to be borrowed from the Air Max 95 Ultra.
Nike's rationale is that the new tooling will "reduce weight and provide all-day comfort," but we suspect that the change has more to do with the expenses surrounding building new molds to properly recreate this retro running shoe.
Because of the changes, the sneaker is actually billed as the Air Max 96 XX and not the Air Max 96.
The return of this sneaker is a spendy one, with each shoe hitting retail on Aug. 19 for $175. Both will be available at 10 a.m. EST tomorrow via Nike SNKRS here.
