Last month, we learned that Nike would be collaborating with Louis Vuitton men's artistic director, Kim Jones, and now the first sneakers from the project have been officially unveiled.
For this collaboration, Jones reimagined the Nike Air Zoom LWP from 1995, which is notable for being the first running shoe to feature Zoom Air cushioning. Here, Jones gives the groundbreaking sneaker a modern update, but also keeps things familiar by using the last of the Air Max 1, one of his favorite Nikes.
"I like the fact that it has come from an old shoe but has become a completely new shoe," Jones said of the updated tooling. "It took quite a few tries to get it right. At first it was too chunky and then it was too skinny. I was thinking about a shoe that I would really like to wear and be proud of."
The Air Max inspiration extends to the colorways, which include black/volt, black/white, and black/purple. "All the colorways come from old Air Maxes—there’s an Air Max 95 colorway and one from a classic, original Air Max, then we added another color palette that was looking at the future," Jones said.
These Kim Jones x NikeLab Air Zoom LWP sneakers will be released alongside a collection of apparel that's designed to be easily packable for those on the go. It all launches at NikeLab locations on July 23.
