While his Golden State Warriors are taking aim at the NBA's record books, Charlotte native Stephen Curry has been vocal with support for his Carolina Panthers as they gear up for Super Bowl 50. It just so happens that the team's star quarterback, Cam Newton, is Curry's Under Armour brandmate, which made for an interesting sneaker sighting at today's Super Bowl press conference.
On Newton's feet were Panthers-themed Under Armour Curry Twos, presumably a custom job. Panthers logos appear on the lateral and medial sides of the shoe, while a honeycomb pattern, likely a nod to the area's other home team, runs along the tongue.
However, the most eye-catching feature about the sneakers is a reconstructed tongue that unzips to reveal Superman attire — inspired by Newton's signature endzone celebration.
With Nike's apparel licensing deal in place, fans won't see anything like this hit retail anytime soon. However, if the Panthers are victorious on Sunday, don't be surprised to see some kind of crossover product release from Newton, Curry and Under Armour in the future.
