Sacramento area sneakerheads have the opportunity to turn their shoes into pieces of Kings history thanks to a sustainable new effort from the franchise.
The new Golden 1 Center, which will replace the Kings' current home of Sleep Train Arena upon its completion, will use a layer of foam underneath the wood surface of the court to distribute the weight of players. The organization plans to use recycled basketball shoes to help create the foam, similar to how Nike uses old shoes to build tracks.
Fans can bring their shoes to Sleep Train Arena for donation at the Kings-Pelicans game on Jan. 13. They can also tweet @SacramentoKings or @Kings_Community why their shoes should be included in the new court for the chance to have them picked up (more on that here).
In an amusing note at the end, the Kings are asking that no Kobe sneakers be donated.
