The soles of sneakers are being used as evidence in court, and might help put an accused man away for a long time.

Joseph Taylor Hughes, 29, is charged with the attempted murder of the mother of his children. On Jan. 18, Hughes allegedly stomped the victim's face during an attack, leaving footprints that matched those on a pair of sneakers later found at his house. The footprints also matched those left on the door of the victim's bathroom, which was kicked in during the attack at the victim's home in Topeka, Kan.

Police officer Ross Gustafson testified that the prints on the door and the woman's face were consistent with the outsole pattern on a pair of black and white shoes found at Hughes's house. Reports mention that the sneakers were Nikes, but do not call out the specific model.

Nike actually has a designated person, ex-employee Herbert Hedges, to testify in cases in need of a sneaker expert. Hedges does not appear to be involved with this case.
