Nike Patents Virtual Reality Sneaker Customization

An interesting patent surfaces.

by Brendan Dunne

Imagine an upgrade to NIKEiD that lets users hold an actual sneaker in their hands while altering the design via a set of virtual reality goggles.

That might not be far from reality based on these images from a patent that Nike was awarded on Feb. 3. The patent mentions an “interacting device," which appears to be a stylus that users would manipulate in order to change different panels on the shoe. The patent doesn't make it clear whether this approach would be intended for consumers or for Nike designers to use while working on shoes.

If the former were the case, some sort of in-store set up seems more likely, as asking people to buy VR goggles just for the sake of NIKEiD is a stretch.
