When Prince Fielder steps up to the plate tonight at Citi Field, the Detroit slugger will attempt to become the second three-time winner of the Home Run Derby. Of course, the first and so far only player to achieve that feat was Ken Griffey Jr., the man who made the Derby what it is today.

Way back in 1998, Griffey Jr. became the first player to win the All-Star tradition multiple times. After nearly skipping the contest due to scheduling issues, The Kid put on a show at Coors Field, crushing 19 home runs on his way to a second Derby title (another win the following year brought his total to three). On his feet, Junior wore the Nike Air Griffey Max III, one of the most unique (and oft forgotten) models from the Griffey signature line.

With its asymmetrical lacing system and large, swoosh-laden strap, the Air Griffey Max III would certainly make an interesting retro option for Nike Sportswear. Check out Junior's Home Run Derby heroics above, and take a closer look at the Griffey Max III in the images below.
