Almost nine years after taking his talents to South Beach, Shaquille O'Neal returned to the arena he helped build as the Los Angeles Lakers hung his #34 jersey from the rafters for good.

Shaq's departure from LA wasn't pretty, but before passing, owner Jerry Buss made it clear that he wanted Shaq immortalized as a Laker legend. His vision became a reality Tuesday night at Staples Center in front of family, friends, teammates and the usual cast of Hollywood celebrities.

The ceremony included words from former coach Phil Jackson, Executive Vice President Jeanie Buss, a video message from Kobe Bryant and a speech from the man of the night. After summoning the Laker faithful with his famous "CAN YOU DIG IT?" call, Shaq thanked several of the night's special guests, the late Mr. Buss, his parents, children and of course the fans. Then, Shaq became the first player to have the modern version of the Lakers jersey officially retired.

Next up for Shaq: the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Due to a five year retirement requirement, that won't be happening until 2016.

If you missed last night's ceremony or would like to re-watch it, you can view the video above and several photos from last night below.
