With the 576 celebrating its twentieth anniversary and the Olympics finishing up in Beijing, New Balance capitalized on this opportune dénouement by releasing the timeless runner in a “Chinese Opera” iteration. (Mark the opera as a cultural antonym to United States society. In China, highly skilled instrumentalists, signers, and dancers showcase their craft. Don’t believe me? Check out Samantha Brown’s Passport to China. For clarification, I was sick and waiting patiently for the new episode of No Reservations…) And without a doubt, the shoe perfectly captures the effortless fluidity, beauty, and quality of the Chinese leisure experience in sneaker form.
While the shoe’s daring mismatched color scheme of red/green/black/white might seem better suited for some type of beleaguered semi-Italian affair, the 576’s beauty lies in its singular detailing. Peep the silk inner lining, “masked” toebox, and Chinese lettering near the heel. Fresh! But as it always seems to go in the industry nowadays, the shoe is limited to 576 pairs and will only see distribution in the South Pacific/East Asia region.

I love this shoe, but growing up in a Chinese home, I can’t say the same for Chinese Opera.
My ears bleed every time I hear it.
