Jordan XX2

D’Wayne Edwards hopped back on board to address the Jordan XX2. Using the experience gained in designing the XX1, Edwards was able to build an even more advanced shoe. This cutting-edge technology and sleek design made for, once again, a winning combination.

For inspiration, Edwards would turn to the F-22 Raptor fighter jet. Most obvious is the number significance with the F-“22” and the Air Jordan “XX2.” The fighter jet also embodies the game and spirit of Michael Jordan, and touches on the concept of stealth. In the rear ankle area of the shoe, a camouflage, 3M pattern was used, similar to that of the camouflage found on a fighter plane. IPS was used again with the XX2, which had evolved since its debut. Suede, full-grain leather and a split-grain leather comprised the upper of the shoe, which provided a comfortable fit. Edwards also opted for a titanium-reinforced shank plate, which offered exceptional midfoot support. Titanium offers excellent strength-to-weight ratio, and its atomic number just so happens to be 22. The choice of using the Zoom Air or encapsulated Air through removable pods was also implemented with the XX2, similar to the XX1.

As Jordan had been away from the game, the face of Jordan Brand, for the most part, was younger. Players like Chris Paul, who had at that time recently signed on to be a member of Team Jordan, was seen in his home and away version of the Air Jordan XX2. Ray Allen, one of the best shooters in the game, was often seen in a pair of XX2s. Carmelo Anthony, although having his own signature Jordan shoe, would still be seen in a Denver make-up of the Jordan XX2. Longtime Team Jordan member Mike Bibby was also seen in the XX2, albeit a customized, low-top version.

Jordan colorways for the XX2 were once again kept to a minimum. Jordan Brand did the traditional Bulls home colorway with the White/Black/Varsity Red and then the away version with the Black/Varsity Red/Metallic Silver. These colorways are staples of the line, and have remained so even without MJ on the court. An interesting take on the XX2 was Jordan Brand’s basketball leather inspired Brown/Black colorway. The entire shoe was covered in a pebbled, basketball-type leather with black accents. Finally was the release of the White/Varsity Red/Black “Omega,” which featured an image on the side triumphantly depicting MJ celebrating after his “Last Shot” with the Bulls.

The shoe performed well and looked good; once again Edwards had stepped up to the plate and knocked one out of the park. Jordan fans and basketball players were pleased with the Air Jordan XX2 and the entire concept surrounding the shoe.
