Well, it is now official – Carmelo Anthony will remain with Jordan Brand after 2008. After some doubt during his first few years, the biggest question has finally been answered. Reportedly worth $60 million over the next seven years, Melo’s deal is equal to rookie Kevin Durant’s, making them tied as the second highest paid Nike/Jordan Brand players behind only LeBron James. Since his December 2006 15-game suspension for participating in a brawl during a game against the New York Knicks in Madison Square Garden, many thought that it would be the last straw for him.
Reports started popping up everywhere that after Melo’s contract expired, he would not be re-signed. This due to Nike/Jordan Brand having a strong image and many felt that from 2004-2006, Anthony’s antics were not those in which they felt properly represent said brand. The problems started out with an amateur video leaking, capturing Carmelo hanging out in the streets of his hometown in Baltimore with known drug dealers. The video went on to show him cooperating in threatening the city’s police informants. But since these events, Anthony has re-invented himself as well as his game and done a complete turnaround.
He has since led his Denver Nuggets team to the NBA playoffs every season, as well as helped Team USA qualify for the 2008 Beijing Olympics – not to mention he built a $1.5 million youth center in “B-More”, donated $3 million to Syracuse University (which he played at for one season before entering the NBA after winning a national championship in 2003), and started several programs in the Denver area for underprivileged children. If that’s not steps in the right direction then I don’t know what is. Let’s just hope his recent DUI charge does not set him back.
So with the 2007-2008 NBA season nearing its end, we can now put the rumors to rest. His Jordan Brand line, currently on the Melo M4, will continue on. Look for the Melo M5 to launch this holiday season, featuring heel and forefoot Zoom Air for the first time in a Melo shoe, and Jordan Brand is also already in the beginning stages of conceptualizing the M6. So love him or hate him, love his shoes or hate them, Melo isn’t going anywhere – and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
