Following up on a May report by Spanish basketball site TuBasket, Minnesota Timberwolves point guard Ricky Rubio's rumored multi-year endorsement deal with adidas is now official. Jon Wexler, the brand's Global Director of Entertainment and Influencer Marketing, confirmed the move on his Twitter account earlier today. Details on the contract breakdown have yet to be released, but the initial report speculated that Rubio would instantly become the brand's third highest paid basketball athlete.
Not only does Rubio add star power to the adidas Basketball lineup, but he brings massive international appeal as well. He'll miss the upcoming London Olympic Games as he continues to rehab a torn ACL in his left knee, but at just 22 years of age, there will be plenty of other opportunities to showcase his exciting skillset on the international stage. Rubio spent his rookie campaign and previous years playing in Spain wearing Nike.
Rubio is the first domino to fall in a sneaker free agent class that may be the most stacked of all-time. Details on who else you may see jump brands can be found in the June iPad Issue of Sole Collector.
Official press information for Rubio's deal with adidas is likely on the way. We'll update you with specifics as they become available.
