Today's Nike NFL equipment and apparel launch event is centered around the Elite 51 Uniform, the next generation in superior lightweight performance that delivers a fully-integrated system of dress for athletes at the highest level. Suiting every need of the athletes is a uniquely engineered chassis and baselayer. Rooted in body-led design, the uniform system is built for a body-contoured fit resulting in zero distractions in order to increase speed.
Inspiration for the Elite 51 Uniform comes from the late great Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman, who wore the number 51 as a player serving in the 10th Mountain Division in WWII. Understanding the importance of a light and durable uniform in combat, Bowerman knew that shedding weight would lead to an increase in mobility and speed.
Nike continues to perfect Bowerman's vision, crafting an integrated system of dress where the athlete's baselayer works together with the entire uniform. Lightweight padding protects crucial "hit zones" in the baselayer, while new innovations such as Flywire are added into the neckline to reduce weight and provide lockdown fit over pads. As a result, sleeve articulation is increased for a better range of motion. New four-way stretch fabric provides a streamlined shrink-wrap fit, helping create a design that enables speed without compromise.
The uniform also features the Nike Vapor Game Sock, an innovative sock designed for football. Features include a knee-high design, Nike Pro-inspired cushioning and mesh venting.
Helping players get their hands on the ball are Nike Vapor Jet 2.0 gloves, which deliver a lightweight, breathable and articulated fit that is combined with Magnigrip on the palms for a tacky grip suitable for all weather conditions. The team logo is featured on the palm when athletes interlock hands.
