Apparently schools in New Zealand take their uniform guidelines very seriously. So seriously, in fact, that students at the Wainuiomata High School are being pulled out of class and put in isolation for wearing improper footwear.
Images of what sort of shoes aren't appropriate, pictured above and below, suggest that the boys at the school aren't allowed to wear sneakers at all. The school says its uniform guidelines were made clear to students when they enrolled, but that hasn't stopped parents from complaining about the punishment.
One mother called the policy "stupid" and said that kids shouldn't be taken out of class for such a small transgression. Students taken out of class are made to sit in a room by themselves and do work given to them by teachers.
The school claims that it has 50 spare appropriate pairs that it will lend out to students caught wearing inappropriate footwear, and that it only turns to the isolation punishment after those are exhausted.
School officials say that about ten students of the 860 enrolled at Wainuiomata High School have uniform issues each day.
