Sneaker Free Agent Blake Griffin Returns To Nike Inc.

words // Nick DePaula

After receiving offers from several footwear companies over the last month, including a huge dark horse bid from Chinese brand ANTA said to be in the neighborhood of $7 Million per year, sources say that LA Clippers star forward Blake Griffin has decided to return to Nike Inc.

Griffin missed his entire true rookie year with a knee injury, but his marketing potential soared almost immediately once he hit the court for a Rookie of the Year campaign during his second season in the NBA. The marquee sneaker free agent this year is due a healthy raise on his sneaker endorsement deal, considering his original deal was worth just a rumored $400,000 per season.

Earlier this summer, he signed a maximum contract extension with the Clippers that could be worth as much as $95 Million over five years with incentives met. With that in mind, money was said to not be a key factor in Griffin's decision making process when it came to deciding on a new footwear deal.

He was recently spotted wearing Nike Basketball's Lunar Hyperdunk 2012 at Clippers Media Day, and we'll keep you posted as more details arise.

he should of went to Under Armour ... would of got paided more, been the face of the company and got a signature shoe

I'm pretty sure he's gonna get his own signature shoe with Nike quite soon but if I had to guess, then I would say that he's next in line after Kobe is done playing but shoot with all of the money that Nike has now, they may give him one before Kobe's done. Blake's just too marketable to not have his own signature shoe

While your points are valid, Nike has not really focused on big men over the last few years. Unless Griffin improves (skills-wise, which he def will) dramatically and the Clips go deeper into the Playoffs, he will continue to be the face of the Hyperdunk series only. There's just too many players in Nike's stable that is more marketable than him right now, who "deserves" a sig; Rondo, DWill, Westbrook (if he stays with Nike after this week), even Harden. Bottom line, Griffin had a chance to go to UA to be Da Man and blaze a trail. He chose to stay in his comfort zone, can't knock him for that but can't help but think what could've been...

Good idea to choose dedication over finance in this situation.
