We take a look back at what was definitely one of this year's most anticipated releases from the Jordan Brand in the "Grape" Air Jordan 5 Retro.
Last seen back in 2006 during the Jordan Brand's "Lifestyle" era of retro models released in limited numbers, 2013 marked the widest release seen for the "Grape" Air Jordan V since their original introduction during the 1989-1990 season. And although pairs were readily available, most of them almost immediately sold out through raffle and ticketing systems at retailers across the country.
Widely recognized for being worn by MJ on a box of Wheaties, Jerry Seinfeld and Will Smith in Fresh Prince among others, the "Grapes" were once the most coveted Air Jordan V colorway. Now reissued twice since their original release 23 years ago, many would argue the classic kicks aren't what they once were.
Quality wise and in comparison to the 1990 "Grape" Air Jordan V, the 2013 version sports the same full leather build and replaces Nike Air branding with Jumpman logos on both the heel, sockliner and outsole. Unlike the 2006 LS version, this year's release arrived in OG-inspired cement speckled Air Jordan packaging.
