When Missy Miller was 5 years old, she tragically lost her big sister Laurie, one of the first Doernbecher designers, to a brainstem tumor. She then faced a challenge of her own during the summer of 2013, when she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes after a blood test. While at the hospital, the doctors also sent her for an echocardiogram, which revealed an atrial septum defect, otherwise known as having a hole in the heart. Poised and dreaming of bright lights and big cities, Missy is more determined than ever.
Missy’s Women’s Free 5.0 is styled in her favorite colors, with a Swoosh a silver Swoosh as bright as her personality. The tongues display two logos: A hand icon represents the finger pricks that help Missy keep her diabetes under control, while initials on the other honor her big sister’s memory. The New York City skyline, a reminder of Missy’s big city dreams, adorns the insoles and heels.
You can pick up the ‘Doernbecher’ Women’s Nike Free 5.0 on Sunday, November 23 at nike.com.
