Nike Will Drop a Special Kobe 9 When He Passes Michael Jordan in Scoring

Kobe needs just 77 points to pass His Airness.

There aren't many things to celebrate this season if you're a fan of the Los Angeles, so a lot of attention is being paid to Kobe Bryant's pursuit of Michael Jordan on the NBA's all-time scoring list. As of today, Bryant is just 77 points behind Jordan for third, though he's already played nearly 200 more games and put up 300 more shots than the Hall of Famer in his career. Still, it's an accomplishment worth noting, especially for somebody who has patterned his career after His Airness.

When Bryant does clip the mark, Nike Basketball will deliver a special colorway of the Nike Kobe 9. Though the shoe is blacked out in the teaser tweeted earlier today, sneaker insider @DeadstockNYC says to expect a white multicolor style. Nike Basketball also tagged NIKEiD in the photo, so there may be some kind of new design option.

There is no release date, but going by Bryant's current scoring rate, he'll likely pass Jordan next Friday at San Antonio or Sunday at Minnesota. No word yet on whether or not the shoe will be available immediately after he scores 32,293.
