Nike Signs Michael Kidd-Gilchrist

words // Brandon Richard

After a dominant run en route to capturing the NCAA National Championship in April, the starting five of the Kentucky Wildcats basketball team announced their intentions to enter the 2012 NBA Draft. Before they make the leap, the champs have some off-court business to take care of, and forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist is the first of the group to land a sneaker endorsement deal.

Earlier today, Kidd-Gilchrist announced a deal with Nike on his Twitter account, sharing a picture of "Nike Welcomes Michael Kidd-Gilchrist" banners currently hoisted at Nike HQ along with the quote, "Glad to be a part of the Nike Family!" The deal is a continuation of the partnership formed by Kidd-Gilchrist and Nike at the college level. He also wore Jordan Brand at St. Patrick High School.

Kidd-Gilchrist is expected to be a Top 5 pick in June's NBA Draft. In one season at Kentucky, he was named All-SEC First Team, SEC All-Defense, SEC All-Freshman and was a Second Team All-American.

Follow Kidd-Gilchrist @MikeGillie14 on Twitter as he continues his journey to the NBA and prepares for his first season as an official member of the Nike team.

NBA rookie Michael Kidd-Gilchrist not only will be playing for Michael Jordan's Charlotte Bobcats this season, but he's also the newest member of the Jordan Brand.

smart move by nike

Agreed. Great motor to go with his skills. So glad he is a Nike guy. Solid Move. These folks that dont know who he is much not know much about basketball. Or at least not watch ESPN during March. Regardless, money move by Nike.
Raised in the Bluegrass, Live in NC. Laid back, looking for some good KD's always. Go 'Cats.

big surprise wasnt he a nike kid in high school? the good ones are controlled by the sneaker companies they even dictate which college they choose

I'm glad you pointed that out. People should read and do their research. Kentucky and Nike conspire to legitimize certain talent. There's nothing so great about Kentucky that a kid that could have stayed in the NY area and won a title for Syracuse chooses to go to the damn country to win a title to make a bunch of rednecks happy. (not all of KY are rednecks, but that's how Kidd-Gilchrist and other northerners see Kentuckians) So there's dirty money involved. Not Kidd-Gilchrist's fault though. He's just following the money and the light at the end of the tunnel. That light isn't from Jesus though. Quite the opposite. lol.
