Similar to the Air Force 1, Nike’s Dunk was also quickly adopted by street culture after initially being introduced as a basketball shoe back in the ’80s. And just like Riccardo Tisci remixed the AF1, he’s now done the same with the Dunk.
“The Nike Dunk has a fascinating legacy,” Tisci says. “It has been both mainstream and niche, adopted by communities of varying size and influence. But no matter the model, the Dunk has always had a cultural cachet that, as a designer, I’m quite drawn to.”
While it may be called a Dunk on paper, what you’ll find is something much different than the sneaker you may be familiar with. The R.T. version exaggerates proportions everywhere, extending the collar to new heights, enlarging the Swoosh, and stretching the eyestay. The heel tab was flipped-upside down, and can be seen right above Tisci’s logo.
Performance needs, for the streets, rather than the court, were also taken into account. You’ll find a full-grain leather upper, drop-in Lunarlon insole, and a quilted leather collar and tongue—both utilizing memory foam.
“The shoe not only needed to convey Riccardo’s creative interpretation of it, but it also needed to perform,” says Senior Design Director of NikeLab Footwear Innovation, Nate Jobe. “Through close collaboration we were able to put a new spin on a Nike icon, while still delivering the function needed for all-day wear.”
The sneaker release date for the NikeLab Dunk Lux High x RT is right around the corner, dropping on Feb. 11. It will be available exclusively at NikeLab retailers and online.
