The MAG never had a typical retail launch. Every pair was instead auctioned off, with all the proceeds going to Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. That meant meant the standard “buy low, sell high” ethos of resellers was thwarted. Or was it?
The average auction price when the MAGs originally released in 2011 was $3,800. While that's an unprecedented number for a sneaker’s launch price, it turned out to be a pretty good investment as well. As of September of 2014, three years after the original launch, we calculated the current average selling price on eBay to be $8,100.
Just because prices went up initially though doesn’t mean they still are today. In fact, this might be the best time to buy a pair since their original launch.

With the help of Campless, we’ve taken a look at the average resale price of the Nike MAG in more recent months. While there was a spike in price during April, the general trend has been moving down. In fact, it hit its low point for the year in June, going to a ‘mere’ $5,227. It's current price sits at $6,103.
The reason? Well, it’s now almost three-quarters of the way through the year 2015. And while hoverboards may not be here yet, auto-lacing sneakers are on their way. Based on information provided by Nike, including the word of the MAG’s designer, Tinker Hatfield, we will see power laces in 2015.
That means that the ultra-expensive release from 2011 may soon only be the 2nd best version of the Nike MAG. The resale market knows this, and it’s already being seen in the prices of the MAG. That’s bad news if you’re a reseller. It’s probably time to unload those extra pairs now. That’s good news though if you’re a buyer. The sneaker is considerably more affordable (although not actually affordable) than it was just a year ago. You never know how low the prices may get on the 2011 version, but it’s a safe bet that whatever does end up dropping in 2015 will be even more expensive.
