Remember When Nike Made Sneakers in Japan?

A vintage Nike tennis gem serves as a reminder of the brand's production history.

Nike's sneaker output has actually moved around quite a bit during the brand's 40 plus years in the industry.

There was a time when the brand was making sneakers, including the pair pictured here, in Japan, which makes sense given Phil Knight's early connection with that nation through Asics. The model is a Nike Wimbledon from 1974, a sneaker that will never be back in retro form with that specific name for obvious reasons. This wasn't the only silhouette made in Japan either, plenty of the early runners from the 1970s were sourced to that country. While Nike has kept production firmly in other Asian countries for the past couple of decades, there's no doubt that heads would welcome a return of Japanese Nikes given the aura of quality associated with Japanese production. This pair of made-in-Japan Nikes are available on eBay, although the asking price is pretty massive.
