Nike Air Foamposite: The Definitive Guide to Colorways

One of the most recognized sneakers of all time, today we take a look at the lineage of the Nike Air Foamposite.

Originally released in 1997, Nike Basketball debuted their Foamposite technology in the form of two models, the Nike Air Foamposite One and the Nike Air Foamposite Pro. Penny Hardaway debuted the Ones in the only original colorway released, which also featured his ‘One Cent’ logos. The Pros featured an added jewel Swoosh on the sides, sans the Penny branding, to help set to two apart. While the Foamposite Pro was retroed first, it took quite some time for the Foamposite One to make its return, an idea some can hardly fathom these days.

In 2001, the Nike Air Foamposite Pro was retroed for the first time, spanning seven colorways in five years. 2007 would mark the return of the Nike Air Foamposite One with four colorways releasing, including the original ‘Royal’ pair. Still, Foamposites weren’t what they are today. Sure, the ‘Royal’ Foam Ones did well — even the ‘Blackout’ pair — but the other two releases in late ’07 managed to hit sales racks in some places. In 2008 the first House of Hoops exclusives came and went, but other than that, Foam releases were still few and far between.

From 2009 through 2012, the Foamposite Pro dropped in a few new colorways, along with more Foamposite Ones including some of the more coveted colorways like the ‘Eggplants’ and ‘Coppers.' Then in February of 2012, the hype for the Foamposite line would forever change. Que in the ‘Galaxy’ Foamposite One. The first Foamposite released with an all-over graphic that caused so much hyseteria, Nike was forced to cancel its online release as well as many in-store releases, making them even harder to obtain.

Since then, it’s been smooth sailing for the Foamposite One and Pro with various colorways releasing and no signs of that slowing down. While some of the latest ‘graphic’ styles seemed to have a harder time at retail than others, the Foamposite still lives on. After a few limited releases that sold out instantly, along with the recent ‘Yeezy’ colorway, the future of Foamposite is still up in the air. As far as hype goes, only time will tell whether they will stay at their 'sell-out' status or continue to be a ‘hit or miss’ type of theme.

So as we continue to ride the Foamposite wave, expect to see more colorways for both models drop throughout the rest of 2014 (and most likely into 2015). To see the Foamposite in all its glory, take a look at the history of the Nike Air Foamposite from its first release up to the most recent retro below.
