As big a star as any competing at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, sprinter Michael Johnson ran into the record books and the hearts of Americans in golden Nike track spikes.

The spikes, coupled with World Record performances in the 200 and 400m events, turned Johnson into an international star and changed Olympic style forever. They even joined him on the cover of TIME Magazine. Johnson, nicknamed ‘The Man with the Golden Shoes,’ repeated as the 400m champ in 2000 — again in gold shoes.

“Opting for gold shoes could have been considered downright cocky, but I was confident and never doubted my ability to deliver gold medals to match my shimmering footwear,” Johnson said in his book, “Gold Rush,” according to the Telegraph.

Now a USATF Hall of Famer, Johnson and his gold shoes continue to inspire. In fact, the retired sprinter has announced that his famous gold shoes are on the comeback trail.

No other information, like a release date, was announced, but the 2016 games in Brazil a little more than a year from now seems like a good peg.
