Miami Hurricanes Leaving Nike for adidas

Adding fuel to rumors that have been making rounds in recent weeks, the Palm Beach Post is reporting that adidas will announce a new partnership with the Miami Hurricanes this week. After the school decided not to renew its contract with Nike, adidas and Under Armour submitted significantly larger bids to obtain apparel rights.

An original Nike school, UM became the first college to sign an all-sports contract with an apparel company in 1987. Former Nike executive Sonny Vaccaro famously said the deal allowed them to ‘own the school.’

While financial terms have not been disclosed, the Post believes adidas’ winning bid is in the ballpark of the 8-year, $33 million deal it announced with Arizona State last month.

As of now, adidas outfits 11 of 65 power five conference schools, while Nike outfits 45. Under Armour moved to 8 after reeling in Notre Dame last year.
