Metta World Peace's New Sneakers Feature Detachable Panda Head

With his NBA career possibly over, the player formerly known as Ron Artest inked a deal with the CBA’s Sichuan Blue Whales in August. Following reports that he wants to be called ‘The Panda’s Friend’ during his stay in China, Metta World Peace unveils the panda sneakers he’ll be playing in next season.

Sure to ruffle a few feathers over at adidas, ‘The Panda’s Friend’ basketball shoe is a low-top with a removable panda head on the tongue. World Peaces explained the concept to Courtside Access:

“Before every game, I will be wearing the white or black shoes. The top part of the shoe has a panda on it…it is removable. I will be throwing it to a friend in the crowd. The person who catches it will be the Panda’s Friend of the Day.”

So, that’s interesting. There’s still a question that hasn’t been answered: are the arms also detachable? Because that would look a bit ridiculous in-game.

We’re not sure who World Peace teamed up with to produce the shoes or if you’ll ever be able to buy a pair. While the kicks are pretty much a rip-off of Jeremy Scott’s designs, we can appreciate Metta doing something fun with his sneakers.

Check out the white and black-based pairs below.
