From 1972 to 2014: adidas Originals SL Loop Runner 'SL '72'
words // Zack Schlemmer
In celebration of the upcoming debut of the all-new silhouette from adidas Originals, the SL Loop Runner, the Three Stripes has created this limited edition homage to the shoe's inspiration, the SL '72 trainer.
Created as a between-events casual shoe for the adidas athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics, the SL trainer became known as the brand's first "podium shoe" after being worn at the medal podium by many of the brand's winning athletes. All these years later, the SL is back with a modern twist as the SL Loop Runner, featuring a sleek and stripped-down style.
Already borrowing the lightweight upper, iconic t-toe and sculpted midsole from the SL '72, the SL Loop now gets the SL '72's original blue, white and red colorway in a limited, never to be sold run of 200 pairs. They won't be sold, but apparently they will be obtainable, as adidas Originals suggests: See select adidas Originals retail stores for information on how to get a pair.
(For those interested in the original SL '72, they are available now online at adidas.com)
