The year is 1961 and President Kennedy addressed the nation in his “Urgent National Needs” speech and presented us with a challenge:

“I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth.

This radical statement entered the USA into what is now known as the “Space Race”. A race that the USA would ultimately win, planting our flag on the rocky surface of something believed to be out of reach.

Extra Butter has teamed up with Saucony to tell this story. A company formerly known as Hyde Footwear, Saucony was commissioned by NASA in the 60′s to design the boots for space exploration, and those very Hyde brand boots were worn during the first ever space walk. It is this back story that drove us to pick up where JFK left off and continue to push things forward, in our own buttery way that is…

You ever hear that expression about how a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step? That’s where our ACES Grid 9000 comes in. Based off the pressure suits worn by astronauts, the ACES, or Advanced Crew Escape Suit, is an iconic piece of space travel history as well as a pivotal moment in the advancement in suit design for astronauts.

We’ve all seen the iconic pictures of the astronauts, helmet in hand, in their bright orange suits with the jackets decorated in patches. Extra Butter has taken this aesthetic and a little bit of the patriotic flare and translated it onto the Grid 9000. The bright orange upper mix of nylon and suede, reflective 3M pieces for visibility during flight, and the NASA-inspired Extra Butter patches, which are interchangeable on different parts of the shoes as they are backed with velcro. This is the pair presented to our astronauts after the rigorous training they endure in preparation to embark on an out of this world experience.

The ACES Grid 9000 will take off via their online store Monday, April 28th. Visit the Extra Butter blog for in-store release information for their two locations.
