Ewing Athletics Guard - Upcoming Colorways
words // Zack Schlemmer
After a successful return of the Ewing Guard earlier this month, Ewing Athletics will be back in November with another round of the classic Ewing silhouette in two more colorways.
Originally designed as a shoe for guards (hence the name), the Guard has a similar look to the 33 Hi, but with a lower cut and slimmer features. First up in the Guard's new colorways is a black suede pair with accents in white for a clean and simple look. A white leather "Knicks Home" version is next, featuring a white leather build with accents in blue and orange.
Both new Guard colorways release on November 9th (along with the Purple Suede 33 Hi) at select Ewing Athletics retailers. However, the Knicks version will be more limited, being an "I-95 Regional Limited Release", according to Ewing Athletics. Get a preview of each new Guard colorway below, and let us know if you'll be in the market for either pair.
Adidas had an "unofficial" Ewing color shoe, but another company had signed Patrick. They soon sold to a man named Mr. Young Kim, who was a sneaker wholesaler in Queens, NY. He also worked for Blue Ribbon Sports previous. He had a few stores, but sold NB, Fila, and Nike to stores that those companies would not sell to.
He called his company "Next Sports", because it was Nike, then Reebok, and he said that his company was "next".
When a store owner went to him to buy Nikes or Fila, he told them that if they didn't buy 12 (or so) pair of Ewings, they could not get the other shoes! There were Ewings all over BKLYN, Queens, BX, and NYC in a week!! He had the side of a building in downtown BKLYN painted with a 5 story high Patrick Ewing ad. He made posters with Ewing holding a silver platter with a shoe on it.
I worked for Converse at the time. Roy, who designed for Mr. Kim, got a call from a company at LaGuardia Airport that the boxes he was waiting for were there. Roy took me in his Corvette to the airport...and we drove up to the hanger!!! Remember, this was way before 9/11. The guys there gave him the box and he ripped it open...it was a sample for a Ewing with a clear sole! Roy was excited because Nike had a contract with 3M for the special glue used on clear soles so they would not yellow. Roy found another company to get a similar glue from.
They made MILLIONS selling Ewings. It died once the started doing Hiking Shoes...but when it was good, it was amazing!!
