Fresh off their 23rd Anniversary in 2013, today we take a look at the lineage of the Air Jordan V.

Originally released in 1990, the Air Jordan V dropped in four colorways. It was inspired by a World War 2 Mustang fighter jet and features a reflective 3M tongue, mesh netting on the tongue and side panels as well as a unique set of lace locks. They were retroed for the first time in 2000 and were the first Air Jordan Retro of the new millennium. This run lasted from January to July with four colorways releasing, two original and two new Retro+ colorways. The black and metallic silver colorway was also the final Air Jordan 5 Retro to feature ‘Nike Air’ branding.

2006 would see the return of the Air Jordan 5 Retro. Featuring a wide variety of releases, everything from new and old colorways to limited ‘LS’ releases, women’s edition’s in high and low-top as well as a pair featuring a full laser print upper. In 2008 the original white, black and red colorway returned for its second retro as a part of the Air Jordan 18/5 Collezione ‘Coundown’ Pack, featuring the number ‘23’ stitched on the heels for the first time outside of MJ’s original PE edition’s from 1990.

2009 saw three new colorways release, two of them a part of the second two-shoe pack from Jordan Brand outside of the CDP releases, the ‘Raging Bulls’ Pack. Six colorways would drop during a small run in 2011 including the final ‘Bin23’ release.  After that, the Air Jordan 5 Retro would take over in 2013 as a part of the 23rd Anniversary of the AJ V. Three out of the four original colorways were re-released along with the return of a long-lost favorite, 2000’s ‘Laney’ Air Jordan 5 Retro+. Numerous new colorways dropped as well, including the first release from Jordan Brands ‘Element’ Series, the Air Jordan 3LAB5 which featured a full elephant print upper, taken from the Air Jordan III.

The Air Jordan 5 Retro returned this year with its third ‘3LAB5’ colorway. After that, nothing else is confirmed to drop at this time. So while you wait for official release info on the next Air Jordan 5 Retro, take a look at the history of the Air Jordan V from its first release up to the most recent retro below.
