The Adidas UltraBoost is the most important silhouette the brand has introduced in the past five years. Since its debut, it’s become not only the brand’s best-selling running sneaker, but also one of the category’s most popular sneakers on and off the track.

“Back in 2015, the original UltraBoost was the best running shoe we had ever created—the ultimate in its class—and it changed the running industry forever,” said Sam Handy, Adidas VP of Design for Running. There have been several iterations of the runner—from laceless versions to winterized midtops—but the shoe hasn’t really gotten a true sequel…until now.

The brand is dropping an updated version of its staple running sneaker on Dec. 15 dubbed the UltraBoost 2019. Unlike its predecessor, the UltraBoost 2019 has a more minimal design. While the original UltraBoost was comprised of 17 different pieces, the 2019 version has been cut down to just four components.

“When we created the UltraBoost 2019, we really went back to the simplicity of building a running shoe,” Handy said. “We interrogated every single component, looked at how we could change and optimize it to deliver more benefits for runners, then re-engineered it from scratch with these learnings in mind.”

It still has all of the core features that made the OG so memorable such as a full-length Boost midsole and Primeknit upper, although there are some modifications.
