One of the biggest successes from the recent Nike Air Force 1 revival has been the Special Field version of the shoe, a built-up silhouette created by Nike Sportswear designer Ben Kirschner. While these kind of remixes are usually shunned, the SF AF-1 has been a hit since its debut.

A new story posted at Nike SNKRS breaks down Kirschner's design decisions and shows the stages the shoe went through in its path to retail. One of behind-the-scenes shots shows a totally different sole on the sneaker.

"In the very beginning, there was no specific brief for this shoe. It was just something I made in the sample room. And initially, it had a crepe sole," Kirschner explained.

The most recent version of the Nike Special Field Air Force 1 to release was the camouflage colorway, which arrived at retailers on Friday.
