In creating the latest signature shoe for LeBron James, Nike Basketball’s Senior Designer Jason Petrie did all he could to sketch up every imaginable look that came to mind. Here we have not only the shoe’s first series of pull-over samples, parts and pieces as it would take shape, but also several of Petrie’s original onion paper sketches during the shoe’s exploratory time. With a consistent “anti-roll rand,” as he calls it, seen along the perimeter of the shoe just above what would become the Air Max unit, it’s the shoe’s upper that goes through the most changes along the way, as he searches for just the right overlay pattern and flow.
Follow along below for The Process, and an inside look at the sketchwork of Jason Petrie as the Air Max LeBron VII began to take shape.

Thank you so much..but still looking for the final rendering…but I appreciate the way you detailed the upper..but what about the midsole..and outsole..more pics are welcomed..Thanks.
wow, that’s dope.
it really is a beautiful thing to see the design process from beginning to end and get a better feel for where the shoe came from. a lot of people just think these shoes are created after a 10-minute scribble on a napkin, but there’s so much that happens behind the scenes… hundreds of iterations, experiments, proposed questions, etc.
and those black/white/gold ones are just sexy-elegant… another must-have colorway to add to my moon cakes, navy/golds and red carpets
Damn nice to see this entire process.
Some of those sketches are interesting, especially the one with possible flywire setup?
Although I am not sold on this shoe yet…………
Fruity pebbles vII ? Haha….
Thanks for the pictures.
What’s the status with an all, or majority lebron issue?
There’s tons of lebron guys out there that would be perfect candidates for this.
Abt, kdog, visrael, zach13g, bkals, are a few that come to my mind first….
Rudolph, doubleo, also……

never imagined that these things could be so damn complicated and technical! are there college courses for these things?
^ Yep. The field to study would be Industrial Design. For this Friday’s Industry interview, I’ll be sure to post up either D’Wayne Edwards or Justin Taylor’s stories, as they share some really good insights on the educational side of the design field.
Awesome post Nick thanks. I’m in school for ID at Univ of Cincinnati DAAP program – just got back from a Under Armour internship and I’ve interned at new Balance as well lookin forward to more posts like this on SC
