If you are old enough to remember watching the fall of the Berlin Wall 20 years ago, the memory probably induces goosebumps. While just sitting in front of the television back in the winter of 1989 was moving to say the least, for residents of Berlin, and Germany as a whole, it must have been more than incredible. The fall of the wall was part of a bigger youth movement in Germany that has continued ever since. Though when it comes down to it, sneakers may not mean as much in the big picture, for many of us it is precisely that “youth” movement that makes us obsessed with what’s on our feet and fills our closets.
To pay homage to the falling of the Berlin Wall, and to that very youth movement that inspires us to relive our youth through our footwear choices, Nike Sportswear has taken a silhouette that was revamped with a more adolescent overtone in 1989, and will bring the Air Pegasus 89 back with exuberance. While these quickstrikes will arrive at other select Nike retailers, none may be as geographically significant as Overkill, who is based in the very city where the wall fell 20 years ago.
Those old young-at-heart enough to remember seeing the wall, should remember the graffiti laden West Berlin side. The bright colors have been condensed into a bright purple around the collar of the Pegasus 89 runner, while the crumbling of the wall is represented by the speckled cement-like color of the Swoosh, and dark greys and black help to add the appropriate feel of the former Berlin Wall.
Pick up one of only 510 of these at select Nike Quickstrike retailers on December 4th.
