Last year’s Nike Lunaracer marked a new era in comfort for many people. [For race day runners, I guess they were pretty good for that too.] In terms of just kicking around a pair of shoes, the Lunaracer became my go-to at pretty much all times, and it was tough to find a lighter, softer and more comfortable alternative.
Grocery store. Gym. Around the house. Errands. Everything. In the past 14 months, I’ve gone through three pairs of them, always keeping a pair in constant rotation and even one stored away in the closet for another day down the road. It’s hard to say they’re the most durable runners of all time, as after about three weeks on average, they usually started to look like hell, but for the life of the shoe, they followed through on a simple goal: offer lightweight comfort.
With the new Lunaracer+ 2, which are just now arriving at Nike running accounts nationwide, a few minor adjustments were made to help improve what was already an insanely comfortable shoe. For starters, the colors all match, which is quite a difference from the varying multi-neon tones that the original’s launch colorway would take on after a few wearings. There’s also a more beefed up arch for improved support, as well as a thicker tongue and collar for a more substantial overall fit and feel. As you can see, the biggest difference is simply in the overall construction, as the original featured all of its panels bonded together under the micro-mesh upper, while the second version features bonded layers atop the shoe’s upper, making for practically zero seams along the inner. The 2′s Flywire panel also runs only through the heel, whereas the first Racer featured strands through the midfoot and heel.
The Lunaracer 2, seen here in Medium Grey/ Electric Green/ Neutral Grey, retails for $100.

Much thanks to the Lunaracer 1 for the comfort, but it’s time to move on!
