The Nike Hyperize has been the subject of much debate lately, after last month Detroit Pistons trainer Arnie Kander banned an “unnamed” sneaker from the locker room, while describing the Hyperize in almost exact detail. We noticed that at least one of the Pistons players was still wearing the Nike Hyperize, Charlie Villanueva. We had some great responses to that post, and it sparked all sorts of conversation.
Yesterday, Charlie Villanueva himself responded via Twitter. Saying that “First off I still rock my Nike Hyperizes, I love them! I’ve yet to had any problems whatsoever; ankle injury can happen to anyone at anytime.”

There is no doubt it can happen to anyone, but does the fact that he is wearing substantial ankle braces have anything to do with it? Considering guards Ben Gordan and Will Bynum didn’t wear them while playing in the Hyperize, it’s hard to think the braces don’t have some sort of relevance.
Sole Collector’s own Terence Tang recently gave a great performance review on the Hyperize, breaking down the pieces of the shoe that seem to be the subject of much debate. Granted thousands of people play in the Hyperize on all levels daily without spraining their ankles, there is still something to be said of Arnie Kander’s comments. He’s obviously in a position to see first hand the positives and the negatives, whether it be on a point guard or a power forward.
Check out the rest of Villanueva’s comments below, and follow him at twitter.com/CV31

Didn’t find this much interesting, maybe cause Im not a Villanueva fan *sleep
Maybe CV needs some magical MJ shoes to help his game out.
A lot of NBA players fall comfortable with a shoe and they stick with it…..who’s a trainer to say NO to what you can wear.
fucking stupid. just drop it. it prolly wasnt even the hyperizes
dat dude charley V need to get him some kicks that make him not suck!!!
Holla! Thats whats up uncle charlie! Rep yo hood kid… I love it, first that you read SOLE comments, second that you had the balls to say what you feel. Every other comment I read was about someone turning their ankle in a similar shoe. Thanks for setting the records strait! “This is protected by the red, the black, and the green, with a key, SISSYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY”!
it ain’t caused him problems coz he ain’t even movin’ that much! hahaha!
This is true! the hyperflight give the same problems too. i think its the one weakness of the fly wire. they are strong and wont tear, but they give easily. maybe they should use fly wire on Nike condoms!
Unless the interview with Arnie Kander was a fabrication of course, there was a shoe banned.
Charlie reads SC. Classic!
I live in Michigan, was watching the game when this was announced on Foxsports Detroit, at least two months ago. Yes, it was the Hyperize…the broadcast crew showed the shoe on TV. The team probably wants CV to wear the shoe so he does break his ankle. Biggest disapointment in the NBA this season, except for possibly Ben Gordon. Was hoping both would be traded. I’m sure CV whined enough til he got his way. And until recently, he not wearing them. Get your game together Chuck!
This is such a b.s. call. Shoes don’t wreck ankles, if they’re gonna go, they’ll go. the hyperize is better than most shoes because of the external heel counter, which is the main force (as well as the midsole and upper around the midfoot) in supporting the foot when it encounters twisting forces…
Haha Charlie is one of the goofiest looking dudes in the NBA, but I agree with him here. Although I’m not a big Hyperize fan, I don’t think the injury problem is as significant as people are thinking now, these types of injuries can happen while wearing any type of shoe.
Partially true(that injuries can happen in any type of shoe), but like any gear, it can increase, or minimize the risk of injury. Depending on the players needs, a shoe can be dangerous, just as much, as a shoe can be very safe.
And with the Hyperize setup, it’s very clear some players have no problems with ‘em(like a lot of the Suns, Pau, Dirk), and some players do, because next to BG, and Bynum switching, a lot of other players went to the Hyperdunks, or moved on to Kobe’s, to get away from the Hyperize’s thoughout this season.
So it’s a shoe with a very specific target audience.
