adidas Basketball Drops Gilbert Arenas

words_Nick DePaula

Just hours after Gilbert Arenas entered his guilty plea for one felony count of gun possession in Washington D.C. Superior Court, adidas terminated its endorsement contract with Agent Zero. While last week the global athletic manufacturing company and official NBA athletic apparel partner maintained that it was “evaluating our relationship with Gilbert Arenas based on his recent conduct and subsequent suspension from the NBA,” according to adidas spokeswoman Lyn Famiglietti, the brand wasted little time in voiding their existing contract with Gilbert once he owned up to his actions and pled guilty.

The official statement released by adidas was concise and clearly worded, but for Gilbert, it means an end to the 8 year, $40 Million agreement he originally signed in 2003, and a loss of a guaranteed $10 Million he would’ve seen over the next two seasons. According to some sources within the company, there may have also been a “Minimum Games Played” clause that Gilbert failed to live up to over the past two seasons, putting the overall worth of the contract at an even lesser value. Should the Washington Wizards void his NBA contract, he’ll lose out on the remaining $78 Million he would’ve been owed over the next four seasons.

Putting an end to the once successful chapter of Gilbert Arenas’ time with adidas Basketball, which brought us a great first signature shoe in the Gil Zero, adidas released the following statement:

“In response to Gilbert Arenas’ guilty plea to felony charges, adidas has terminated its agreement with the athlete effective immediately.”

Consequently, adidas Basketball removed nearly all images of Gilbert Arenas from their website. He’s now noticeably missing from the “Athletes” listing.

However, the TS Cut Creator Low in Gilbert’s Black/White/Sandstorm colorway is still available, featuring his signature along the heel of the shoe:

And lastly, under ‘Related Product’ above, you’ll notice a Gilbert Arenas jersey, which actually now leads you to an Antawn Jamison jersey. Gilbert’s once-popular #0 uniform is also no longer sold at the Verizon Center or on NBA.com.

LOL @ Spencer and Beno. Go Kings!

I hope Arenas comes back from this but I am not sure he has the drive to do so.

  2. auditude says:

I think he definitely has the drive to come back. He is a big time gym rat and will be dying to prove himself on the court. He’s just not mature as he should be at this point. I liken him to Manny Ramirez, it’s just “Gil being Gil.” I wish him the best. A guy like Stephen Jackson is being praised on his play after the Malice in the Palace and his shooting off his loaded gun. I don’t think Gil’s actions come close to those. So I wish him the best and hope he learns from this.

As a Wiz fan, I think it’s over between them. The sad part is, that leaves the whole team up in the air. His actions have hurt guys like Antawn and CB3D’s future with the Wiz. Sounds to me like they may be starting over here in DC. AJ deserves to be with a winning organization, although trading him would be waiving the white flag.

  3. Terence says:

Sucks that Gilbert is going through this. I still think of him as the guy who took the time to autograph my jersey at the end of the Wizards @ Rockets game before disappearing into the tunnel, even though the Wizards had just lost a close and frustrating game.

I’m not saying he didn’t make a mistake with the guns – he definitely did – but I hate that this is tarnishing his playful and fun reputation and good nature. It’s like the world is trying to erase him, and like ^auditude said, others have done much worse (in my opinion) and still had a chance to come back.

    I’m pulling for Agent Zero.

I don’t think they’re trying to erase him, I think they’re pulling the emergency brake, because his playful, fun loving reputation, turned into flat-out criminal, and arrogant behaviour.

And it’s logical the Wizards had to drop him, I mean, they even changed the team name, to avoid being associated with guns. So they can’t keep him, without being hypocrites.
Same with adidas, they’re making a clear choice, to put their morals, over commerce, which is all commendable IMO.

I’m pretty sure Gil can come back though, because Stern is a lawyer, he’ll be a hard-ass for a while, and after he’s convinced Gil got the point, and will be a law-abiding citizen, he’ll let him back in(like he’s done with other troubled players before).

  4. AceUno says:

Im in total Agreement with Terence…. I don’t know Gil personally.. but i do think he is fun loving and good natured… and he did make a mistake.. the weird thing is.. some people didn’t event consider that he did what most other high profile athletes/ celebrities would never do… Fess up! will fully. and cooperated without question…
the suspension by the NBA was forthcoming even without the “taking it lightly” deal with the pics during the introduction…
i dont know if this is true.. but regarding that incedent i heard that his teammates were the ones who promted him to do that.. as a joke of sorts…

regarding Adidas… Its funny that the “Brotherhood” dropped one of its more visible members.. well so much for that. LOL!!

  5. yanyan yu says:

adidas you suck men!!! brotherhood of what?
clearly gil zero had faults but you dont stick w your family? cmon!!

  6. Johnny says:

good. gilbert is negative role model. everyone makes mistakes but he was joking about it afterwards. he’s immature.

  7. Are we ready for a Nike Zoom Agent Zero?

  8. Seven Duece says:

Time to hit up AND1 ala Spreewell

  9. top says:

adidas is so gay; they just cencor their website, betray gilbert. WTF ??

  10. BRich says:

There’s no “betrayal” here. lol. He brought guns to work and reportedly pulled one on a teammate. You have to understand how serious that is. Or go to your job with guns, pull one on a co-worker, and see how that plays out. I actually don’t recommend that at all, but I guarantee being “fun natured” won’t save you.

  11. bay o says:

gilbert sucked anyway. shouldnt have ever signed him. All he does is piss and moan about not being considered as good as lebron and kobe

  12. Blueue21 says:

Everybody love guns…This guy crittenton is a lazy stupid negro…If i were gil i would pull the trigger and buried that gay negro..Adidas is a brotherhood for the wolf.. Your shoes design sucks and ugly..Cheapest design ever.. You are too far away from Nike.. Imagine Gil Zero wearing Lebron’s nike…
